Don't Bug Out

Debunking The Myths & Misconceptions About Bed Bugs.

Myth #1

Bed bugs only live in dirty places.

Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are equal opportunity feeders. They're not attracted to dirt or mess, but to the warmth and carbon dioxide humans emit while sleeping. So, from luxury hotels to cozy apartments, anywhere people rest can become a potential feeding ground.

Myth #2

You can't see bed bugs with the naked eye.

Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, reddish-brown and flat. While they're nocturnal, you can spot them with a keen eye. Look for them near seams and tufts of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards.

Myth #3

Bed bug bites are a sure sign of an infestation.

Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites. Bites often appear in clusters, zigzag patterns, or straight lines, but they can also be mistaken for mosquito bites or other skin irritations. The presence of shed skins, fecal stains, or live bugs is a more reliable indicator of an infestation.

Myth #4

Bed bugs can jump or fly.

Thankfully, bed bugs are wingless insects. Just like a spider they hitch a ride on luggage, clothing, or pets to travel from place to place.

Myth #5

Bed bugs only come out at night.

While bed bugs are more active at night when people are asleep, they can feed during the day if hungry enough.

Myth #6

Bed bugs only infest beds.

While their name suggests otherwise, bed bugs are not picky about where they hide. They can lurk anywhere in a room, including cracks in walls, furniture, behind baseboards, and even electronic devices.

Myth #7

DIY methods can get rid of bed bugs.

Over-the-counter sprays and foggers may kill some bed bugs, but they're unlikely to eliminate an entire infestation. Bed bugs can reproduce quickly, and some populations may have developed resistance to insecticides.

Myth #8

Having bed bugs means you're unclean.

As mentioned earlier, bed bugs are not attracted to dirt. A bed bug infestation can happen to anyone, regardless of hygiene habits. Most of the time when someone gets bed bugs, they simply got them from someone else- who also got them from someone else.

Myth #9

Bed bugs spread diseases.

While bed bug bites can be itchy and uncomfortable, there's no evidence that bed bugs transmit diseases to humans. In the rare event someone gets sick from bed bugs, it's not so much that the person received a disease from the bed bugs. Rather the person most often has a reaction to having been bit, which most of the time is based on a unique health situation.

Myth #10

Professional treatment is too expensive.

The cost of professional bed bug treatment may seem daunting upfront, but it's an investment in your peace of mind and a healthy sleep environment. Early intervention is key to preventing a small problem from becoming a big one.
